Thieves take $2 million in jewelry from Henrico business
A Henrico County jewelry store owner who made national headlines in 1994 for killing two robbers has lost at least $2 million in inventory after a robbery early this week, becoming one of the largest heists in recent national history.
Burglars made off with nearly $2 million in stock from a Henrico County jewelry store early this week, becoming one of the largest national heists in recent history.
Beverly Hills Jewelers, Ltd. was closed for the holidays. The store’s owner, Gary Baker, 62, thinks that the thieves moved in on the jewelry store around midnight this past Monday. It’s thought that the burglars cut power to portions of Wister Center, a shopping center on the 8100 of Staples Mill Road, which suspended power to the Beverly Hills Jewelers security system.
“They took everything,” said Baker in an interview for the Richmond Times-Dispatch story. “I’m still here and so are my employees, but what has been taken is what I’ve worked to leave to my children and grandchildren,” he said. “All that is gone.”
In 1994, Baker was involved in a nationally-covered incident in which Baker shot and killed two armed and masked men who had attempted to rob his store. “I don’t have in-store surveillance because I didn’t want film of someone being shot or for my family to ever have to witness on film me being shot to death,” Baker said. As a result, video surveillance is not available for review to aid investigators in identifying the thieves.
Baker’s store did not have insurance, and the owner remains uncertain as to whether he will continue the business.
