Street Store for Homeless open for business on Saturday

A chance for the homeless to easily pick up some clothes that they might need.

The Street Store™ consists of series of multifunctional cardboard posters that turn an ordinary sidewalk or fence into a shop display. Some of the posters have a hole in them to allow people to use them as cloth hangers. The project asks citizens to donate clothes and shoes they don’t wear and leave them ‘in’ the shop or locations around the area so the homeless can pick them up at the Street Store™ event.

The Street Store™ was originally launched in Cape Town, South Africa, in January of this year and should be thought of more as an event rather than a retail location. Since that first store there have been nearly 100 Street Store™ events across the world.

Richmond will be hosting its first this Saturday, Decemeber 6th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 1803 E. Broad Street. At the Richmond event, homeless and other folks in need will be able to take any of the items that are available for free. The event is being hosted by Anita Kozakewicz from Henrico County and Yvonne Royster from Chesterfield County who formed “clotheitforwardrichmond” and are partnering with Help Somebody, an organic, grassroots community based nonprofit.
