Good Morning, RVA: Violence, foam, a correction, Council, and more than pizza

If you don’t move around enough over the next couple of days, you may begin to sprout mushrooms.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 63 °F, and today brings with it this past weekend’s soggy weather. It will be warmer than the past couple of days, so if you had Dagobah-type plans you should be good to go. If your plans were more on the Tatooine side of things, you’ll have to wait until…maybe this weekend? Lots of rain in the forecast is what I’m saying.

Water cooler

Richmond Police are reporting a homicide that occurred on Saturday night on the 6300 block of Midlothian Turnpike. Wayne M. Smith, Jr. was found suffering from a gunshot wound, and he later died of those wounds at the hospital. This is Richmond’s 20th homicide of 2016.

Oh no! Foamhenge needs a new home. Please, please, please let it be in Richmond! Maybe we could convince NewMarket to put it on the giant hill they own facing the river? MAYBE WE COULD PUT IT IN THE RIVER. Or maybe we could replace Jefferson Davis’s colonnade with it?! Lots of options here, you guys.

An update to the Carytown Capital One Café I mentioned a couple days back! While it is going into the old Secco spot, Capital One says they will not be tearing down the building: “…we do not have plans to tear down the building in the Carytown location. We recognize Carytown is a community with rich architectural history and we are committed to preserving it.” So there you go!

Pizza Tonight is changing its name to better reflect reality: You can get way more than pizza there, and you can get it multiple nights of the week. Stephanie Breijo from Richmond Magazine will give you the new name and remind you that you need to go grab dinner there at some point soon.

City Council will have another very special meeting today at 1:00 PM to talk budget. Since the Richmond Public Schools budget is due on the 15th, Council has to get a serious move on over school funding. Today’s conversation, I think, should focus on schools since they tabled that topic last week. By the way, you can listen to that particular budget session in that latest episode of The Boring Show.

Here’s another article about America’s old-as-butts transportation infrastructure and the costs of upgrading it to something more modern and, like, useable. Sigh!

Sports!

  • Squirrels lost a few over the weekend and had yesterday’s game postponed due to the rain. Tonight, at 6:35 PM, they start a fresh new series with Bowie (weather pending, of course).
  • Kickers downed the Toronto FC II, 1-0. Congrats to new temporary goalkeeper Matt Turner.
  • Nats swept the Cardinals. They’ll head west to take on the Royals tonight at 8:15 PM.
  • Caps lost to the Penguins on Saturday, 1-2. Game three is tonight at 8:00 PM.

Why you shouldn’t exercise to lose weight, explained with 60+ studies

Mind = blown! Couple this with the “science” behind calories as a measurement and…do we even know anything about our how bodies work at all??

The researchers behind the study found that people who have had success losing weight share a few things in common: They weigh themselves at least once a week. They restrict their calorie intake, stay away from high-fat foods, and watch their portion sizes. They also exercise regularly. But note: These folks use physical activity in addition to calorie counting and other behavioral changes. Every reliable expert I’ve ever spoken to on weight loss says the most important thing a person can do is to limit calories in a way they like and can sustain, and focus on eating more healthfully. In general, diet with exercise can work better than calorie cutting alone, but with only marginal additional weight-loss benefits.
