Good Morning, RVA: Soak up the summer

Relish the heat (if that’s your thing), because a cold front is headed straight for us.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 68 °F, and temperatures will climb back into the 90s today. However, a cold front approaches, bringing with it afternoon storms and some relief from the heat. This may be the last smoking hot day of summer, so soak it up!

The City will hold a 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance today. The official event begins at 8:30 AM down by the courthouse on Marshall Street. You can learn more over on the City’s blog.

We’ve got a nice profile of Hilda Staples, co-owner of the newly-opened Graffiato, that I hope you’ll read. This amazing woman has her hands in seven different restaurants and manages not to have ten heart attacks each day.

The owner of Uptown Alley, the majestic bowling alley deep in the Southside, has plans to open a hotel, convention center, water park combo pack on adjacent property. While I think this sounds bananas, I’ll reserve my judgment. I thought a massive bowling alley was a crazy idea too, but that place seems totally successful. Shows what I know!

Sports!

  • Squirrels have now lost two in a row to evil Binghamton. Done with their home games, they hit the road for one last chance to avoid elimination tomorrow night.
  • Nats busted by Braves, 2-6. They’ll face the Mets at 7:10 PM.

A Watch Guy’s Thoughts On The Apple Watch After Seeing It In The Metal

…though I do not believe it poses any threat to haute horology manufactures, I do think the Apple Watch will be a big problem for low-priced quartz watches, and even some entry-level mechanical watches. In years to come, it could pose a larger threat to higher end brands, too. The reason? Apple got more details right on their watch than the vast majority of Swiss and Asian brands do with similarly priced watches, and those details add up to a really impressive piece of design. It offers so much more functionality than other digitals it’s almost embarrassing. But it’s not perfect, by any means.

Keep in mind that, to watch people, $350 is “entry-level.”
