Good Morning, RVA: Pathetic fallacy

Sigh emoji. Rain emoji. Sigh emoji again. Is there even a sigh emoji?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 51 °F currently, and the skylight above my head tells me it is dark and rainy. By the time you read this, I will be dead. Of disappointment. Must it keep raining forever? The answer, of course, is yes. By 9:00 AM it’ll be raining super hard, and by 12:00 PM it has promised to stop, but I don’t trust it. High in the mid 60s with Christmas Eve topping the week at 80°F.

Louis Llovio and Ted Strong put together what must have been a very upsetting article to research about the death of 12-year-old Amiya Moses this weekend. This is truly a must-read for every single person in the city, because we all need to hear the shattered quotes from Amiya’s mother, aunt, and friend and the description of the circumstances surrounding her death and the capture of her killers. We need to hear Chief Durham’s anger and the community’s grief, and we need to think about a 12-year-old girl bleeding on the grass. We need to pay attention and think about what can be done to stop gun violence. We need it to affect our holiday week! I mean, how else is change finally going to happen?

Meanwhile, some gun control progress is being made, although this quote–just a sighing fact down there at the bottom–feels particularly bleak after reading the aforementioned Amiya Moses article: “Meanwhile, conservative lawmakers, backed by the NRA and Second Amendment pro-gun groups, have pushed for expanded gun rights, fewer restrictions and greater reciprocity with neighboring states.”

But, let’s move onto lighter news (no joke, as I typed that, the rain on the skylight just, like, doubled in force). I hereby give everybody permission to stay in bed for five more minutes!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. If you were a child in Richmond in the 1980s and 90s, you will understand my shock and awe when I say that Billy Surf is returning to RVA radio. Also, WTVR-FM Lite 98 is rebranding as Mix 98.1, which is fine with me as long as that mix still involves a healthy dose of Hall & Oates.

I think about this a lot: Hollywood has changed dramatically during our lifetimes, and now it’s pretty much obsessed with already existing worlds in an attempt to capture your nostalgia. We pretty much do not expect original content out of Hollywood anymore, and that’s a real bummer.

Back to grim news, sorry. No one will be indicted in the death of Sandra Bland.
