Good Morning, RVA: More Scott’s Addition beer, more budget blah blah, more new music, and more gifs

Good morning, RVA! It’s 58 °F, and today is yet another day with weather that can’t decide what it wants to be when it grows up. Expect clouds sometimes, rain sometimes, and temperatures around 70 °F sometimes.

Another day, another announcement of a new brewery coming to Scott’s Addition. Karri Peifer has the news that Väsen Brewing Co. looks to open in the Handcraft Cleaners building sometime this fall. This reminds me of that Avail song, “Scuffletown“: third per capita, third per capita, next year…number one! Although, I’m pretty sure they weren’t singing about how many breweries have decided to call Richmond home.
Also another day, yet another paragraph about City Council’s budget deliberations. Ugh, I know. Ned Oliver condenses and explains the last 12 or so hours of public meetings for you, what a guy! If, however, you’d like to experience those hours yourself, you totally can by subscribing to The Boring Show. It looks like Richmond Public Schools will get about 30% of the additional operating funds they requested and 10% of the additional capital funds they requested. One note on the title of that piece in the RTD: keeping every school open has never been the plan and is not what RPS is working towards (PDF). The additional funding would have allowed for the implementation of a plan (called “Option 5”) that closed, combined, built, and renovated schools to get RPS back to a more efficient place from which to operate.

This afternoon is the final Richmond Transit Network Plan session. If you’ve got a free hour on your lunch break, head over to the Main Branch of the Richmond Public Library and help set the course for the future of Richmond’s bus network. Of course, if spending your free time thinking and talking about transit doesn’t make you giddy (for whatever unknowable reason), you can take their online survey instead. I really recommend the survey–especially if you’ve never thought through some of the tradeoffs involved in planning an efficient and useful bus system (again, if you don’t already spend a ton of time thinking about stuff like that, for whatever unknowable reason).
Following a loss in Indiana, Ted Cruz has suspended his presidential campaign. Here are some of my favorite Ted Cruz gifs: 1, 2, and 3. On the other side of things, Bernie Sanders picked up 43 delegates and Hillary Clinton picked up 37. The New York Times has the full results.
Sports!
- The Squirrels managed to find enough consecutive dry hours yesterday to play both of their games, of which they won one and lost one. They host Bowie tonight at 6:35 PM.
- Nats lost a close one to the Royals, 6-7. They wrap that series up today at 2:15 PM.
- Caps face the Penguins in game four of their Stanley Cup series tonight at 8:00 PM.
