Durango hits Northside YMCA

Amazingly nobody at the gym was harmed.

I’m going to hit the gym took on a whole new meaning this past Sunday as a Dodge Durango drove into the Northside YMCA on Old Brook Road. Although there was damage to the gym and some equipment the YMCA will be operating as normal this week and summer camp will continue as scheduled.

Details from NBC12.

Police believe the driver lost control after having a medical emergency behind the wheel. No lives were taken or impacted for the worse, inside the gym or SUV.

“It was a miracle,” said Richmond Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Currie. “If this would have been a busy traffic day at the YMCA, I’m sure it could have been devastating.”

Officials say the SUV lost control about a block from the YMCA on Brook Road. The vehicle crossed oncoming traffic, ran over a tree, hit two signs, and then smashed through the glass doors and cinder blocks of the building. The Durango careened 25 feet through treadmills and other equipment. The driver and two preteens in the SUV weren’t injured. The couple gym members closest to the Durango, as it barreled through the gym, didn’t get hit.
