Weather! A brief warmup ahead…but what comes after?

Cold enough for you? We’re finally starting to see a little bit of a warmup here in Blacksburg, where today’s high of 33 marks the first time we’ve had a temperature above 32 since December 3, when the temperature hit 35. Cold enough for you? We’re finally starting to see a little bit of a warmup here in Blacksburg, where today’s high of 33 marks the first time we’ve had a temperature above 32 since December 3, when the temperature hit 35. During that same period, Richmond’s lowest high temperature was 37.

Thankfully for everyone, there’s some relief from the cold in store for this weekend. The area of high pressure responsible for the clear skies and cool temperatures will begin to move offshore tonight and Friday, and we’ll start to see some high clouds moving in later in the day on Friday. Temperatures tonight will make another strong dip tonight heading towards 20 or even the upper teens. Highs tomorrow will warm slightly compared to today, making it back into the low 40s, and then falling back into the mid 20s Friday evening.

While Saturday will begin with only some light clouds, they will thicken as the day progresses. Highs will reach again into the the upper 40s, and won’t drop, only falling into the upper 30s as a strengthening low pressure system develops over the Great Lakes region. Precipitation from that system will move into the region on Sunday. Temperatures will still be quite warm, more than warm enough to keep all precipitation falling as rain, though you may see a few flakes falling near the end of the event after the front passes. Don’t expect any snow accumulation, however.

An absolutely frigid arctic airmass will get pulled into the region behind the front, with highs next week likely in the low to mid 30s for the early part of the week. For the statistics nerds among us, that represents 1.5 to 2 standard deviations lower than the average temperature for this time of year.
