RVA Deals: Special Kroger preview edition!

Our bargain-hunter extraordinaire takes us on a little tour of the soon-to-open Kroger out in Short Pump (lookin’ gooooooood) and fills us in on where we can get fruits and veggies on the cheap, soda for less than $.50, and sandwich fixings for next to nothing…

Yesterday, I attended a media preview tour of the almost-completed Kroger grocery store in Short Pump, located at the corner of Lauderdale and West Broad across from Short Pump Town Center. Its grand opening is scheduled for July 29.

Bigger and better is the name of the game at the new location. It measures in at almost 92,000 square feet; in comparison, the current Kroger store in Short Pump is a measly 52,000. The new store also boasts a new color palette (sophisticated earth tones, somewhat like Whole Foods), and numerous other special features catering to customers’ desires:

  • A large wine section offering wine by-the-glass for sale
  • “Bistro” bar with prepared foods, as well as indoor and outdoor seating
  • Kiosk for placing deli meat and cheese orders
  • Big produce section in the store’s interior, instead of along the wall
  • Eco-friendly elements like skylights, motion sensors turning on lights in the freezer cases, and concrete floors which can be cleaned without using chemicals

The current Kroger at 11280 W Broad will be closing within days after the grand opening, and is reportedly slated to become a Hobby Lobby store.

The problem with these deals is: Who on earth needs 10 jars of mayo? How long would it take you to use 10 packs of coffee filters? Who has freezer space for 10 bags of frozen breaded chicken??

  2. I understand your point about the mayo, but I get buying the coffee filters, especially if you’re stocking up for an office.

  3. Kroger does not make you buy 10. They are $1 each. Other stores make you buy 10 to get that price. Kroger does not.

  4. Hi CSB, sorry it wasn’t clear – I write about the Mega Event promos on here so often I forget that others aren’t familiar!

Items marked “wyb 10” are part of the Kroger Mega Event promotion. You can mix and match any 10 participating items to get the $5 off at checkout (equates to $.50 each) (So 2 chicken, 2 Kraft, 2 mayo, 2 pepsi, and 2 filters would give you the deal, for example)

Oh, that makes it more reasonable. Thanks for clarifying! :)

If you go two different days can you get Mega Event deals ($5 off each time)?
