Restaurant openings and closings in December 2015
A mere three restaurants opened in December. Three! That’s about half of our monthly average. But with pizza, pastries, and barbecue at our greasy fingertips, who could ask for anything more?

Pizza Tonight Restaurant & Bar
They started with lunch, a bustling, crowded lunch service with Neopolitan pizza, sandwiches, and salads to sate the lunch-starved Shockoe Slip-goers. Then, with the long-awaited ABC nod of approval, came dinner service, during which chef Randy Doetzer has been making house-made pastas and specials like prawns with green sauce, plus a deceptively simple, positively brilliant appetizer of cabbage with bottarga.
Pizza Tonight Restaurant & Bar hit their stride in December after waiting for months to open their doors at 2110 E. Main Street. Then, to put a bow on the end of a very busy year, they rang in 2016 with a wine-paired multi-course dinner and dancin’ tunes spun by DJ Big Chair on New Year’s Eve.
Idle Hands Bread Company
While baking for Perk! Cafe and Lunchbox in Bon Air, Jay Metzler rekindled a passion for baking naturally-leavened breads. He realized he had stumbled on his true calling. A few months later, Metzler announced his plans to open Idle Hands Bread Company in Scott’s Addition and launched a Kickstarter to make his dreams come true. Well, folks, I’m happy to say that dreams totally come true, and now Metzler is baking his brains out Tuesday through Saturday at 3103 W Leigh Street. The bakery offers fresh bread, assorted pastries, and Black Hand coffee.
Deep Run Roadhouse 2
From the people who brought you Deep Run Roadhouse comes ANOTHER Deep Run Roadhouse. If going to Gayton Crossing for your ribs, pulled pork, and brisket is unfathomable to you, fathom instead going to 309 N. Laurel Street, where, according to Style Weekly, the barbecue is the same, but the menu has been pared down slightly to appease the busy VCU crowd. If you’re going, grab me a Texas Choke Hold sandwich–that’s Rope Sausage Stuffed with Brisket Burnt Ends, Served on a Toasted Sub Roll. Just thinking about it induces a no-joke hunger frenzy.
It’s so hard to say good-bye…
Farewell to Zeus Gallery Cafe, who has been holding it down on Belmont for…well, as long as I can remember. Their closing was shrouded in mystery, so all we can really tell you is that you no longer can go there for dinner. Sorry!
