How confusing has leaf collection been this year? First it was on, then it was delayed, then it was off, now it is back on again.

Yesterday we received a worrisome comment about leaves not getting picked up:

Despite notices to the contrary, it seems that leaves in Bellevue are being picked up ONLY from the street gutters, NOT from the property line. Hence, we still have piles and piles of leaves on the medians of streets that have been “cleaned.”

This info conflicted with what was posted on the City’s website, so I sent them an email for clarification. This was their response:

The crew that does the work indicates that the arm of the vacuum extends three feet from the truck so the best thing to do is the following:

  • Rake the leaves to the curb but NOT into the gutter.
  • Make sure the leaves are no further than 3 feet from the curb.
  • Make sure branches, rocks and other debris is not included in the leaves.
  • The piles can be higher than 2 feet if necessary.

I recognize that this is somewhat different than the information that is on the website but this is directly from the crew so I believe they have the best insight. Also be mindful of the fact that leaves with large chunks of ice left over from the snow might present a problem getting into the vacuum so in some places there might be some patches of leaves left.

So it seems if you want you’re leaves picked up they need to be as close to the curb as you can get them. Hope this isn’t too late for some of you!
