1. 25th Anniversary Production of Les Miserables

Oh, it’s only the BEST MUSICAL THAT HAS EVER BEEN WRITTEN OR PERFORMED OR EVEN CONCEPTED. You think you hate musicals? Think again, bozo. No one dance-fights in Les Mis. No one feels pretty. No one wears silly masks. This is 18th Century France, people. People are too busy being super poor, selling their hair, and building barricades. Sh*t gets REAL for escaped convict Jean Valjean, fanatical police inspector Javert, luckless prostitute Fantine, and a ton more lovable characters in this epic, gorgeous show.

2. 2013 Virginia Women in History Program and Reception

You’ve gotta hand it to the Library of Virginia. The state lawmakers keep on pushing women down and the LoV keeps on raising them back up again. Each year, eight Virginian women from past and present are chosen based on their contributions to history that might be overlooked in the history books (women can’t read, you see, so textbook authors tend to just omit all women, with the exception of Rosa Parks and Dolly Madison) (she served ice cream in the White House! Notable!). This FREE program and reception afterwards honor this year’s group of Virginians who glorify our big dumb thankless commonwealth by making the world a better place. Maybe the lawmakers should try that sometime.

3. 2013 Segg Hunt

This clear publicity stunt might still be genius. You go hunt EASTER EGGS on a SEGWAY. I’m sorry, not Easter eggs. Easter seggs. Basically, you go find River City Segs on Twitter and Facebook, look out for clues throughout Easter weekend, then locate some seggs, dude! What’s a segg? Get out of here with your thirst for knowledge. A segg is an egg-like vessel (I imagine) containing some gifts, usually located at and gifted from a community business. There are so many ways to make fun of this! But I don’t even want to!

4. Salsa Mania

I have this one friend who is always going salsa dancing. I envy that one friend, but she is my only friend, so I don’t to jeopardize the relationship by not going. Basically, from what I’ve gathered, salsa turns you into a svelte, tall beauty like my friend. So go for it! Chris Washburne’s S.Y.O.T.O.S. (See You on the Other Side) will be teaming up with the UR Jazz Ensemble and Combos for a night of salsa goodness, including a lecture, a joint concert, and some salsa dance instruction.
