The all volunteer run nonprofit Richmond Moving Image Co-op presents the 15th James River Film Festival next week, Mar. 31-Apr. 6. Meanwhile, here’s a little warm up for next week’s festival: “Inside/Out” (1997, 121 min.) with Rob Tregenza will be screened on Thurs., Mar. 27, 7 p.m., at the Byrd Theatre. Admission is $5.

Guest director Rob Tregenza visited the JRFF in 1997 (“Talking to Strangers“), and returns as director of the VCUarts new Cinema Program. “Inside/Out,” which screened at the Toronto, Sundance and Cannes festivals, is a story of madness, restlessness, ennui, and ultimately, about time itself, and how we manage to pass it.

Driven neither by plot nor character, the drama unfolds visually (gorgeous wide-screen b&w photography) without dialogue for the most part, at the pace of the always moving camera and the duration of the take. Tregenza falls within the tradition of mise-en-scene directors like Jean Renoir, Orson Welles, Max Ophüls, and Miklós Jancsó.

In case you haven’t heard who’s coming to the 15th James River Film Festival next week: Writer/director Richard Kelly, father-son filmmakers Ken and Azazel Jacobs, filmmaker and community media advocate DeeDee Halleck, the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra, and filmmakers Rob Tregenza and David Williams will headline the 15th edition of the James River Film Festival  at the Firehouse Theatre, the Byrd Theatre, the Richmond Public Library Main Branch and the Camel. Also, join us for Flicker’s 10th anniversary show and celebration and the screening of the finalist in our national juried competition for short films.
