VCU sophomore Larry Sanders, No. 1, uses his 7-7 wingspan on defense to his advantage

Stemming from a Saturday night game at the Siegel Center in which he set career-highs for points and rebounds, VCU sophomore Larry Sanders was named as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week. Sanders, a forward/center in VCU’s scheme, shares the honor with Drexel’s Tramayne Hawthorne.

Sanders had a breakout game in the Rams’ 59-54 victory over the Hampton Pirates on Sat., Dec. 27, establishing personal bests of 21 points and 19 rebounds; he blocked four shots, too. In the stretch run of the second half, Sanders provided two clutch baskets and even found time to make a couple of key defensive plays.

Sanders’ 19 rebounds in a game is the most for a VCU player since 2002. Twelve games into the season, Sanders is averaging 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. He’s shooting at a 58.5 clip (48-of-82) from the floor.

Sanders’ citation marks the fourth consecutive week one of Coach Anthony Grant’s players has captured a CAA weekly citation. Senior guard Eric Maynor and sophomore guard Joey Rodriguez have each collected a Player of the Week award, while freshman forward Bradford Burgess already has two Rookie of the Week awards under his belt.

The Rams (8-4, 1-0 in CAA) return to action on Sat., Jan. 3 when they travel to Newark, Del. for a CAA tilt with the Delaware Blue Hens (5-7, 0-1 in CAA) at 4:30 p.m.
