Who is Kevin Davis?
Kevin Davis began his music career studying theory and percussion while growing up in the multicultural communities of New York City. He attended Virginia Sate University, studied in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. He has performed with a variety of regional and national groups throughout the East Coast and Hawaii. In 2006 he won the Teresa Pollack Award for excellence in the arts. For the past 25 years Davis has been the leader of Richmond’s premiere Afro-Cuban band Ban Caribe. In addition to original compositions the band plays a unique blend of music that fuses elements of Jazz, R&B, African, Latin and Caribbean into an exciting style which Davis aptly describes as Clave’ Soul.
Kevin is currently a percussion instructor at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. Among other accomplishments he is cofounder of the World Beat Workshop, guest artist for the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and Young Audiences of Virginia. He is also a member of the music ministry at Ashbury Methodist and Saint James Episcopal Church.
