Before a crowd of 4,877 at the Siegel Center VCU scored the game’s first eight points and never trailed Longwood. To say it was a mismatch is an understatement. Had it been a boxing match the referee would have surely stopped it long before the final horn: VCU 78, Longwood 45.

VCU’s scoring was paced by junior point guard Eric Maynor’s 17 points and five assists in 23 minutes on the floor.

Rams freshman forward Larry Sanders added 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks in his 24 minutes of action. This was his fourth game as a starter, his improvement so far has been impressive.

Probably the best thing that can be said of this game was that it appeared that no one was seriously injured. This is Longwood’s first year of being designated as a Division I program. However, the Lancers aren’t in a conference yet. To be competitive at their new level they have a lot of work ahead of them.

The Rams (7-3) will travel to Peoria , Ill. to take on the always tough Bradley Braves (7-3) next Saturday (Dec. 22). Last season Bradley defeated VCU on its home floor.
