After the last bell of the day has rung and the students of Petersburg High School have gone home, their building gets quiet, but not for long. For at 5 p.m., another student body shows up on campus, people who have enrolled in the Petersburg City Public Schools Adult and Continuing Education Program, and they will be there most of the evening.

Connie Sears has already had a full and busy life, as a mother and a military spouse. Still, she knows that health care jobs are popping up in the Petersburg area and she wants to be in on the action. So she is one of dozens of people, of all ages and backgrounds, who have signed up to take advantage of the program. Sears plans to become a nurse’s aide.

“I work well with older folks. I want to give them the care that they deserve,” she said.

In addition to GED and Pre-GED, the PCPS Fall/Winter 2009 course schedule offers a long list of available classes, from medical transcription to phlebotomy, to defensive driving and webpage design. Some have been more successful than others.

“We did not get a lot of response for photography or tax preparation this time,” said Shirley Dobie, Supervisor of the Petersburg Schools Career and Technical Education Adult and Continuing Education Program.

On a typical evening in the class that Sears is taking, Dobie leads a discussion of the ethical code of nursing, client confidentiality and terminology. Her students listen intently. Later, they will do hands-on training in a full-size lab just beyond their classroom. Like the younger crowd that was here by day, they will be tested later – and this is the key to their future.
