What: Venture Richmond is leading a botanical makeover of the Canal Walk. Phase two will be completed April 29th when Altria volunteers will help plant more than 2,700 plants along the Canal Walk between 15th and 17th Streets. This will transform the area into a beautiful garden. Phase one, completed in 2015, focused on the Turning Basin area and was recognized by the International Downtown Association as a 2015 Merit Award Winner in the Public Space category.
Why: The Canal Walk is 17 years old and has served as an economic engine for more than $450 million of investment. The Riverfront Canal Cruise operation has been breaking attendance records year after year, attracting both locals and visitors to the Riverfront. More people are living, working, dining and playing Downtown than we’ve seen in decades. The Canal Walk landscaping needed a major update and replanting.
Who: Venture Richmond partnered with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on the new planting plans for the Canal Walk and with HandsOn RVA and Altria for volunteer planting days. ValleyCrest has helped with prepping the area and will mulch after the planting is done.
When: Friday, April 29, 2016 – Plant delivery and layout begins at 6:00 a.m. and Altria volunteers plant from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Where: Canal Walk, along Dock Street between 15th and 17th Streets, Richmond, VA 23219
