Increased demand in services has resulted in a call for volunteers by two Northside organizations focused on helping hungry citizens in the region. Both Meals on Wheels and the Central Virginia Foodbank are asking for individuals and groups to volunteer for a two-hour shift:

Corporate and small-business teams, civic clubs, faith-based groups and individuals are encouraged to “Volunteer to Feed the Need” by confirming a two-hour volunteer shift to help hungry citizens in our community. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. The time and length of shifts depend on the requested assignment. Orientation and training are provided.

In recent weeks, MOW experienced the cancellation of more than 144 volunteer hours per month, and CVFB expects similar reductions in the near future. This drop in volunteerism directly relates to lay-offs of corporate employees who formerly participated on volunteer teams, retirees returning to work, and stay-at-home parents re-entering the workforce to augment family incomes. These trends are expected to continue.

Current volunteer opportunities are Mon. – Fri., and groups are encouraged
