African Americans of Petersburg
Freelance writer Amina Luqman will be hosted at the Siege Museum on February 13, providing a presentation and book signing beginning at 6:30 pm.  Upon moving to Petersburg in 2006, she quickly became fascinated with the city’s rich African American history, the subject of her new book, African Americans of Petersburg. The book is a compilation of photographs, postcards and other images collected during numerous interviews with some of Petersburg’s oldest families and searches through the archives of the city’€™s oldest churches and local museums.  Ms.  Luqman received the help of local historians and archivists to create the book. The result is images and captions that tell the poignant story of African American life in Petersburg.

Her book reveals a glimpse into African American businesses in the famed Halifax Triangle such as Wilkerson’€™s Funeral Home, New Market and the popular Chatterbox Night Club. The book also features some of Petersburg’€™s oldest churches and black ministers; including images of First Baptist church, known as the nation’€™s oldest black Baptist church.

Enjoy photographs of students, teachers and principals of Peabody High School, Petersburg’s oldest Black public high school, as well as images including the first African American mail carrier during the mid 1800’s and pre-Civil War emancipation papers (also known as free papers) dating back to 1858 for the black residents of the historically black Blandford community.

The book also contains Petersburg’€™s most well-known act of civil disobedience during the Civil Rights Movement, the protest to desegregate the city library.

It is the hope of the author that the readers of African Americans of Petersburg €œwill feel inspired to learn more about Petersburg’€™s black history and that the book will allow native Petersburgers a moment to reminisce about their magnificent past and inspire other efforts to preserve and celebrate African American life in Petersburg.

Experience an exciting and educational evening with Amina Luqman at the Siege Museum in celebration of Black History Month.  This event is proudly sponsored by the City of Petersburg and the Department of Tourism.  The Siege Museum, located at 15 W. Bank Street, will be opened from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm as a participating member of Friday for the Arts!  For additional information, contact Kevin Kirby at:  (804) 733-2403.
