Yesterday’s parade, which ended at Lakeside Elementary School, was the sort of bunting-laced event that Norman Rockwell delighted in capturing on canvas.

It was Henrico’s first large procession since the St. Patrick’s Day Parade last marched through the county in 2002. It was also a revival of a Memorial Day parade tradition that had waned over the past two decades.

The parade featured politicians in convertibles; the Fort Lee Army Band; a vintage firetruck; clowns; the Cat in the Hat; and a youth contingent of bicyclists, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and members of the Lakeside Youth Baseball league.

A modest but enthusiastic audience waved and applauded along the parade route, its members sitting in lawn chairs on the side of the road or on the Lakeside median.
