Celebrations include a concert, a symposium, and special musical performances. Tickets for Juneteenth 2014 events may be purchased online.
Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the ending of slavery after the Civil War. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, under Major General Gordon Grander, arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war was over and the slaves were free. This news came two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The Elegba Folklore Society introduced Juneteenth to Richmond in 1996.
