Pack a picnic and bring the kids for a family-style Fourth of July celebration and fireworks extravaganza on July 4 at Dogwood Dell in Byrd Park.

The fun will begin at 5 p.m. with Bak N Da Day on the Dell stage. This group of vocalists will help you find your groove and rekindle romance as they take you down memory lane with their set of oldies but goodies.

With a repertoire of close to 100 songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, these masters of harmony cover the best from Doo-Wop, Motown and the Philly Soul sound. You’ll recognize your favorites from the Temptations, the Miracles, the Four Tops, the Stylistics, the Commodores and many more.

Then at 7 p.m., Larry Robinson, the city’s carilloneur, will perform a concert on the Carillon bells, the 240-foot tower and musical instrument which was built as a memorial to Virginia’s World War I veterans. At 8 p.m., the Richmond Concert Band takes the stage to perform its program of rousing patriotic and popular music, including many tunes you will recognize and want to sing along with.

They will conclude with the “1812 Overture,” played as it was originally intended with orchestra, cannons, Carillon bells and fireworks. A spectacular fireworks display will take place following the conclusion of the Concert Band’s performance.

Although you will want to arrive early for the best viewing spots, the performance also can be viewed on two large screens and the fireworks can be seen from many vantage points throughout the area.

For your convenience, parking will be available at the University of Richmond Stadium, and shuttle bus service from the stadium to the Dell will begin at 4 p.m.
