James Madison’s Juwann James converted a baseline layup as time expired to give the Dukes a stunning, 62-61, victory over defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion Virginia Commonwealth University Wednesday at the JMU Convocation Center.

The win was James Madison’s first over VCU in six tries and improves the Dukes to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. The Rams saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt and slip to 8-4 overall, as well as 1-1 in league action.

James’ basket capped a wild second half that featured eight ties and eight lead changes. VCU senior guard Jamal Shuler put the Rams in front, 61-60, when he drove and banked home a bucket with 10.4 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, JMU’s Pierre Curtis drove around the right side of the VCU defense and found James cutting down the right baseline for the winning score.

Junior guard Eric Maynor led all scorers with 23 points for the Rams, but was just 6-of-18 from the field. Senior forward Wil Fameni added 11 points and five rebounds for VCU. Abdulai Jalloh paced James Madison with 17 points, six assists and three steals.

The VCU Rams take to the road again on Sat., Jan. 5, for a 6 p.m. clash with the UNC Wilmington Seahawks at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C.
