An FYI to local media (and now you!) from the Assistant Director of Marketing & Public Relations at Maymont:

If you grew up in Richmond, Virginia, you may have always called it a “park.” And you may have referred to the barn area as a “petting zoo.” However, these haven’t been proper titles for Maymont for more than 15 years.

We are always grateful and delighted to see media stories about Maymont, and we hope that you can help us to communicate the correct terminology with the public. Please share the following information with your journalists, reporters, writers, interns and others for future stories about Maymont:

• The property is called MAYMONT (not “Maymont Park” or “Maymount”).
• The barn with surrounding pastures is called the Maymont Children’s Farm (not “petting zoo”).
• The 33-room Gilded Age house is called Maymont Mansion (not “Dooley Mansion”).
• The garden with the pergola and roses is called the Italian Garden (not “Italian Gardens”).
• The garden with the waterfall, stepping stones and lanterns is called the Japanese Garden (not “Japanese Gardens” or “Oriental Garden”).
