A neat look at saving a great old bicycle from Carytown Bicycle Company:

Often when someone says they have a “vintage” bike they got down from the attic what they really mean is “my parents bought the equivalent of a wal-mart bike and let is rust for 3 decades”. Every so often someone brings in a vintage bike for service that is really cool though. In this case this really neat old Hercules 3 speed came through the door. After some initial examination we determined that the old Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub was beyond repair. Usually this in itself is enough to derail any potential restoration and it’s usually better to just retire the bike and start over. This bike had so many interesting details that we decided to go ahead and price out replacing the wheels and giving the bike a proper once over. Knowing full well the cost of a new 3 speed wheelset would far exceed the yard sale “street value” of the bike we expected the owner of the bike to say no thanks and move on.

When they said to go ahead with the work we were pretty excited.
