Henrico residents looking for a plot of land to call their own — for gardening purposes, at least — should look no further than the county’s new “Gardens Growing Families” program. The Times-Dispatch reported on the program recently, and North Richmond News had a few details about it back in December. Here’s the TD:

The Henrico County Extension Office is acceptingapplications for Gardens Growing Families, the community garden program for qualifying county residents. For a nominal fee, families can grow vegetables in a plot maintained at the Fairfield District community garden, at the intersection of Vale Street and Michael Avenue, near Lakeside Avenue…

Residents must apply to participate in Gardens Growing Families. The program is open to any Henrico family; however, Fairfield District residents will receive priority consideration for plots in the Fairfield community garden. The Extension Office ultimately hopes to expand the program to each magisterial district. Gardens Growing Families represents the efforts of several county agencies, including extension, recreation and parks, social services and public health.

As we reported last winter, the garden is located several blocks behind the Bank of America branch office on Lakeside Avenue near Bryan Park.

Henrico’s extension office has more details, including an application for interested gardeners and details on the various plot sizes:

Grow your own vegetables at a community garden for qualified families in the Fairfield District.

As a Gardens Growing Families gardener, you and your family will attend FREE classes and workshop on: Importance of Fruits and Vegetables in Your Diet; Gardening: From Seed to Harvest; Integrated Pest Management and Pesticide Use; Food Preparation and Family Meals; Freezing and Canning; and Preparing for a Fall Garden.

The Henrico Master Gardeners will also be available at the garden sites to answer questions and provide timely information on specific vegetables and diseases.
