1) Perfect SOLs, high achievement and graduation success cheered in Petersburg City Public Schools

Six Petersburg High School students were honored in front of the community and the Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools this week for having achieved perfect scores of 600 in the spring State Standards of Learning Tests.

Alexander Davis scored a 600 in both English and Virginia/U.S. History; Samantha Barnes, in Virginia/U.S. History; Derrain Goode and John A. Hart Jr., in World History I; and Vyakunta Youngblood and Sharita Trapp, in World History II.

“That is top of the line and I’m very proud of them. These students studied and put forth the effort,” said Alicia Fields, principal of Petersburg High School. “I hope that they will make a pathway for more students to achieve scores of 600.”

At the meeting, PHS teacher Charles Hodge was also honored for having the class with the highest pass rate, a 98 percent; and Lavonte Hargraves was recognized for persevering to obtain his high school diploma this summer — his success enabled PHS to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate for the seniors enrolled in Summer School this year.

AP Hill Elementary School in Petersburg formally thanked two community volunteers this week for donations on behalf of its students.

Robert McClelland of Kirkpatrick’s Pharmacy on Sycamore Street in Petersburg; and Catherine Saunders-Washington, representing Royal Lodge #77, Majestic Temple 109 were honored in front of the Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools and the community, for donating school supplies for the 2008-2009 school year.

“They have been greatly helpful. They have taken our kids in their arms,” said Heather Lamb, Assistant Principal at A.P. Hill.
