j.c. kuhl (saxophones) and brian jones (drum set) will be teaching a workshop on duo playing this january. though the day and time are still up in the air, it will definitely be one day during the week of monday 1/5/2009-sunday
1/11/2009. the workshop will last 4 hours and cost $100. we are still working on securing the location, but it will be somewhere in the city of richmond. if you are interested, please email your availibility for the above week as soon as you can. below is a general description of what we have planned for the workshop:
hour one:
jones + kuhl will perform 3 compositions that encapsulate 3 different approaches to duo playing (we will hand out copies of our charts). there will be time for discussion/questions after the performance. there will be a brief listening section about the history/discography of duo playing within the jazz tradition, as well as genres outside of jazz.
hour two:
drummers and saxophonists will split up by instrument. each group will work on a chart to perform in the third hour. we will also discuss various modes/techniques of improvisation specific to our instruments, as well as talk about composing for the duo format.
hour three:
sax/drums will reconvene back in the same room and work on a specific jones + kuhl composition. jones and kuhl will coach the different student duos and discuss/demonstrate different approaches to performing the tune.
jc and brian will discuss/demonstrate how they adapted Coltrane’s A Love Supreme from a quartet piece to a duo piece.
hour four:
“free” improvisation hour: conduction, collage form, avant-trades, abstraction, etc. everyone will participate simultaneously (as a large ensemble).
though the tone of this email is kind of formal, i anticipate this workshop to be very loose and lots of fun. please email if you have questions.
