VCU Opens Up Two-Game Lead

VCU reached the halfway mark in the CAA schedule with an impressive 8-1 league mark and a two-game lead in the standings.

The Rams beat Drexel 76-62 on Saturday and have now won seven in a row and 12 of their last 13. There is a four-way tie for second at 6-3 between George Mason, which has won four of five, William & Mary, which has won six of seven, UNC Wilmington, which is riding a four-game winning streak, and Delaware, which has doubled its conference win total from a year ago.

Hofstra’s Agudio Tops 2,000-Point Mark

Hofstra senior guard Antoine Agudio, who leads the CAA in scoring with 22.9 ppg, became just the ninth player in CAA history and the sixth at Hofstra to reach the 2,000-point plateau after pouring in 32 points in Hofstra’s 70-65 victory at Northeastern last Saturday.

VCU/Mason On ESPN2 On Tuesday

First-place VCU visits second-place George Mason on Tuesday in a game televised nationally by ESPN2. It’s the only matchup of the season between the two squads and its the first meeting between the teams since last March, when the Rams rallied in the final two minutes to defeat the Patriots 65-59 in the CAA Championship game.

Dominant Defense

VCU leads the nation in 3-point FG percentage defense (25.5%), ranks 14th in FG percentage defense (38.0%) and is 17th in scoring defense (59.1 ppg) through games of Jan. 27. The Rams have held five of their last 11 opponents to less than 50 points and are allowing only 56.2 ppg in CAA play.

Mason’s Smith Sets NCAA Treys Record

George Mason junior guard Dre Smith set an NCAA Division I record for 3-point FG percentage by going 10-for-10 in the Patriots’ 96-75 victory at James Madison on Jan. 19. He made eight treys in the second half and finished with a career-high 34 points on 11-of-12 FG shooting.
