Two hundred or more volunteers turned out yesterday to help clean up the Cannon Creek Greenway along the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike.

WRIC8 reports that over 20 tons of trash (including over 400 tires) were removed by the volunteers.

What was particularly impressive was the diverse effort to get out the volunteers, which showed in the size and make-up of the crowd. When I asked folk how they found out about the clean up, more than a few said that they hear about it from Hand On Greater Richmond, some mentioned the City Council press release, other said that they heard about through the Sierra Club or by word of mouth. The neighborhood civic associations were well represented, and there were also students from George Wythe HS, girl scouts, politicians, vice principals, convicts, bicyclists, Richmond City police, perhaps the National Guard, and plenty of individuals from all over the Richmond area just wanting to lend a hand and make a difference.
