Every Saturday night at Richbrau’s Taphouse Grill, patrons are entertained by the Brazilian Jazz Duo of Russ Hanchin and Joe Sarver. Hanchin and Sarver remain the area’s self-proclaimed longest running guitar-bass duos, having played together in the late Tommy Clarke’s trio at the restaurant in 2004 and playing duo since 2005.
“The acoustics of the room,” explains Sarver, “are among the best in town for listening to a live jazz performance in a club environment. Russ frequently plays nylon string guitar for the Brazilian music in our repertoire. That sound with the upright bass makes us somewhat unique on the restaurant music scene.”
While Brazilian Jazz is what the two perform the most, they can be heard playing compositions by Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Gershwin, Baden Powell, Benny Carter, Nilson Matta, Jobim and many others, as well as their own originals.
The Russ Hanchin – Joe Sarver Brazilian Jazz Duo can be heard every Saturday night at the Taphouse Grill in Shockoe Slip from 7-10 pm.
