5 Things: 100 years, 4000 miles, art outdoors, outdoors art, and facial hair

AP testing starts Monday—isn’t that terrifying? Anyway this is the weekend to breath, and study, and breath, and drink coffee. Just a heads up, most of these things go well with coffee.

1. Binford Centennial

The hallways of Binford Middle School hold so many memories, one of which involves running back and forth to classes because I could never walk fast enough to get to class on time. You would think that since it’s just one building that it wouldn’t take that long to traverse, but no…Anyway, I’m done having flashbacks to my middle school days. This event involves art! So that means that you should attend.

  • Friday, April 29th • 6:00 – 8:00 PM
  • Binford Middle School, 1701 Floyd Avenue
  • Free

2. 4000 Miles

OK, it’s time to get serious. Let’s talk about the scary and life changing thrill of experiencing emotions. They get in the way sometimes, right? But, for some reason or other, we have them. 4000 miles is a story about a journey taken by an elderly woman and her grandson–and it just might make you feel those emotions. You’ve been warned.

  • Saturday, April 30th • 8:00 – 10:00 PM
  • Virginia Rep, 114 W. Broad Street
  • $30

3. Arts in the Parks

Art, Art, Art. I mean, I don’t think I need to say much about Arts in the Parks. It’s just a pretty cool place to be. I will say that I really enjoy seeing the bumper stickers that say “The Earth without Art is just Eh”. Because, honestly, it’s true–if you don’t believe me, then go to Arts in the Parks and see for yourself.

  • Saturday, April 30th • 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Byrd Park, 1301 Blanton Avenue
  • Looking around is free, art for art prices.

4. Mid-Atlantic Beard and ‘Stache Competition

Beards, Beards, Beards. I mustache you question: Are you ready to see some extravagant facial hair? You can expect worse puns, if you come to the event.

  • Saturday, April 30th • 6:00 – 11:00 PM
  • Canal Club, 1545 E. Cary Street
  • $15

5. 76th Annual West Avenue Garden Tour

If you’re like me, and enjoy walks surrounded by beautiful things and people then you’re in luck! This is the 76th Garden Tour, not just your average walk in the park. Instead it’s like a walk through really impressively pretty gardens and alleyways. I also heard that having iced coffee to accompany the journey makes it even better.

  • Sunday, May 1st • 1:00 – 5:00 PM
  • West Avenue, Park Avenue, and .W Franklin Avenue
  • Free
