This week at Friday Cheers: Future Islands / White Laces
Non-local band and local band share a stage of awesomeness.
Things kick off at 6:00 PM; tickets are $10, and children under 12 are free. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect this week, and, of course, there’s more info on their Facebook page.

White Laces
- Genre: Indie Rock
- Sounds kinda like: River sweat
- Sweet jam: “Keith Sweat”
- Listen to the album: Trance on rdio »
- whitelacesmusic.com
I really appreciate how the White Laces website doesn’t have a thousand words dedicated to the origination of their sound and how they’re redefining genres one show at a time. This is a rare thing these days, to let the music speak for itself. And oh, the music! A fuzzy brand of indie rock that feels perfectly at home on the James River–which makes sense since the band hails from RVA. They’re a pleasure to listen to and will pair perfectly with this week’s Friday Cheers headliner, Future Islands.

Future Islands
- Genre: New Wave Rock
- Sounds kinda like: When a night gets weird but then turns out perfectly
- Sweet jam: “Back in the Tall Grass”
- Listen to the album: Singles on rdio »
- future-islands.com
Future Islands’ 2014 album Singles was definitely my summer jam last year–especially the track “Back in the Tall Grass.” To have them here, on the banks of our very own river, is definitely something that excites me and is worth you blocking off your Friday evening.
