James River Deaths</a> in a larger map</small></p> <p>The body of a young woman who apparently drowned was recovered from the James River in shallow water at <a href="http://jrnh.net/tredegar-beach">Tredegar Beach</a> at the west end of <a href="http://jrnh.net/browns-island">Brown’s Island</a> on Monday evening.<span id="more-4828"></span></p> <p>Richmond police identified the victim as Ashley Nicole Wallace, 24, of Chesterfield County.</p> <p>Richmond Fire Department spokesman Lt. Shawn Jones told the <a href="http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2011/aug/15/body-woman-found-james-river-ar-1240721/" >Richmond Times-Dispatch</a> that foul play was not suspected in the death but that it was under investigation by police. He said authorities were attempting to confirm her identity.</p> <p>Firefighters were called to the scene at just after 6 p.m., and the victim, believed to be in her mid-20s, was dead when the water rescue units reached her, according to authorities.</p> <p>According to the <a href="http://www.nbc12.com/story/15272615/body-of-woman-found-in-james-river" >NBC12 story</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p>She was swimming in just two feet of water with her roommate and some friends when they say she just disappeared.</p> <p>As the sun was setting, a terrible shadow was cast upon what is arguable one of Richmond’s best views. Onlookers on Brown’s Island saw the body of a woman floating near a pillar to the train tracks. Fire crews showed up for a water rescue that was moments too late. She was dead when they got there.
