The body of a young woman who apparently drowned was recovered from the James River in shallow water at Tredegar Beach at the west end of Brown’s Island on Monday evening.
Richmond police identified the victim as Ashley Nicole Wallace, 24, of Chesterfield County.
Richmond Fire Department spokesman Lt. Shawn Jones told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that foul play was not suspected in the death but that it was under investigation by police. He said authorities were attempting to confirm her identity.
Firefighters were called to the scene at just after 6 p.m., and the victim, believed to be in her mid-20s, was dead when the water rescue units reached her, according to authorities.
According to the NBC12 story:
She was swimming in just two feet of water with her roommate and some friends when they say she just disappeared.
As the sun was setting, a terrible shadow was cast upon what is arguable one of Richmond’s best views. Onlookers on Brown’s Island saw the body of a woman floating near a pillar to the train tracks. Fire crews showed up for a water rescue that was moments too late. She was dead when they got there. Investigators believe she drowned in two feet of water.
NOTE: Wallace was added to the James River Deaths page.
