Good Morning, RVA: Here comes the rain, again

Weather today’s weather, and this weekend will improve your mood whether you like it or not.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 46 °F right now, but today’s high is nearly double that! Expect temperatures in the mid-80s and a real good chance of thunderstorms this evening. That persistent gloom you’ve become accustom to over the last couple of days? It continues.

Weekend weather looks great, though, and we may even see the sun!

Katy Burnell Evans of the RTD continues to bring us embarrassing updates on the city’s progress with their Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The Finance Department and external auditors working on the report hope to have it finished by the end of this month…it was due in November.

The man himself, Matthew E. White will play The Broadberry tomorrow night. Tickets are still available, which is kind of crazy–dude was just on Letterman! If you’re unfamiliar, check out this video for “Rock & Roll is Cold“.

Apparently the University of Texas filed trademarks for “Horns Havoc” and “House of Havoc” the night ol’ Shaka left town. First, let’s be clear: “Horns Havoc” is incredibly lame. Second: this feels a lot more like domain squatting than something UT will actively try and promote. I will laugh until I’m burnt orange in the face if they decide to run with “Horns Havoc”, though.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has weighed in on the state’s role in The Sweet Briar Situation, saying it’s best if the commonwealth minds its own business.

If you need things to do this weekend, here are five and five more with a family theme.

Sports!

  • Flying Squirrels beat the Bowie Baysox, 3-2. The series continues tonight at 7:00 PM (pending weather), and you can get your tickets online.
  • Nats fell to the Mets, 6-3, and open a series with Philly tonight at 7:05 PM.
  • Kickers continue their stretch of home games tonight against the Wilmington Hammerheads FC at 7:00 PM. Game predictions here and $20 gets you two tickets and two beers.
  • Caps and Rangers face off in the final game of the regular season tomorrow at 12:30 PM.

What to expect

Today, expect to:

  • Learn more about the BRT
  • Clap your hands or roll your eyes at this week’s beer news
  • Help figure out where to take children out to dinner
  • Think differently.

This morning’s longread

I Was Sexually Assaulted At UVA. I Don’t Accept the Reporter’s Apology.

If a graphic account of a premeditated gang rape was what she felt would get people to care, she could have found a more reliable story to tell. I can think of several. By choosing not to verify Jackie’s story despite having the time and resources to do so, Rolling Stone has given rape apologists ample ammunition. You shouldn’t have to preface your own experience with, “What happened to me wasn’t as bad as Jackie, but…” in order for it to matter. But now you do, and the plausibility bar is that much higher.

And, if you haven’t read it yet, the Columbia Report that details what went wrong with the original Rolling Stone story.
