Good morning RVA: chilly this morning, cold tonight

This weekend’s warm temperatures, just like the Olympics, are outta here!

Welcome to Monday. It’s about 42 °F out–a full 30 degrees colder than it was yesterday afternoon. While I can get behind today’s high of 54 °F, this evening temperatures drop to the mid-20s. Bleh.

And speaking of bleh, there’s talk of snow on Tuesday night. Nothing to be super concerned about yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

As of right now, your morning commute is looking pretty, pretty good.

Olympics watch

The Olympics are over! That’s a bummer on a couple fronts. First, I really enjoy when the entire nation can talk sports together, continuously, for a few weeks. Second, writing about the Olympics filled a nice spot in this column.

Team USA finished with 28 total medals (nine gold, seven silver, and 12 bronze), five behind the Russians, good for second place. Some quick 2014 medal stats:

  • At least one American medaled every single day of the Olympics except for February 22nd.
  • 14 female Americans and 14 male americans took home a medal.
  • Four American took home multiple medals, but none more than two (Meryl Davis, Charlie White, Steven Holcomb, Steven Langton).
  • Team USA took seven medals in freestyle skiing.
  • Team USA took one medal in hockey, short track speed skating, and luge.

The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in Rio de Janerio, making Brazil the first South American country to host the event. Things kick off on August 5th, mark your calendars.

Water cooler

Early this morning a man was shot and killed at 1304 W. Graham Road, an apartment complex adjacent to Virginia Union University. The University was locked down for two hours, and police have yet to release any details. Anyone can sign up for text message alerts from the three universities: VUU, VCU, and UR.

The Rams fell to Massachusetts in a close game on Friday, while the Spiders topped La Salle on Saturday. This puts George Washington, Massachusetts, and VCU tied for third place in the Atlantic 10 standings. Richmond’s just a half a game out in fourth place.

Remember, if you work downtown, Sugar Shack Coffee quietly opened (to a line out the door) last week at 1110 B. E. Main Street. Hit them up this morning to start your week off right.

Denny Hamlin, who is totally from Richmond, came in second place in this past weekend’s Daytona 500 behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. The race was delayed over six hours due to rain.

You may have heard that Netflix has entered an into an agreement with Comcast to pay them for…something. The internet was in an uproar and gnashed its teeth about the end of Net Neutrality and more expensive Comcast bills. The Streaming Media blog has a different take on the situation and is worth a read.

Remember when one of the rings in the Olympics opening ceremonies failed to open correctly? Yesterday’s closing ceremonies put together a nice, self-aware joke about the malfunction.
