5 Things to Crowdfund

Your friends and neighbors are back from vacation with a vengeance. There are too many September causes and projects to list them all, but here are five that I hope you enjoy.

Bring Minds in Motion to Hopkins Road Elementary School

Hopkins Road Elementary School in Chesterfield County needs $5,000 for its students to participate in the Richmond Ballet’s Minds in Motion. All kids should have the chance to experience the Arts, in this case through dance.

  • Goal: $5,000
  • Campaign Ends: No end date
  • Best Reward: No presents, just donating to help kids.

READ FOR PIXELS 2014

My five to ten minutes of research1 couldn’t determine why the Read For Pixels campaign listed Richmond, VA as its base, but after reading about the campaign I don’t really care. Best-selling authors will do remote readings and Q+As via Google Hangouts to support The Pixel Project. The Pixel Project is dedicated to ending violence against women.

  • Goal: $5,000
  • Campaign Ends: September 30th
  • Best Reward: You can get a signed copy of “Alif The Unseen” from G. Willow Wilson, the creator of Ms. Marvel,2 for a mere $50

100 Beds For 100 Kids

Some kids don’t have beds. Beds For Kids, Inc. gives kids beds. Beds costs $250. They want 100 beds. Super-complicated. Turn your money into a bed for a kid.

  • Goal: $25,000
  • Campaign Ends: October 9th
  • Best Reward: For $100 you will receive a picture of the bed you helped purchase for a kid who needed it.

ObscurO Jewelry

Jill Shropshire is growing her business, ObscurO Jewelry, and needs your help as she acquires tools to make better jewelry from more sustainable materials. Each piece is unique, and may or may not solve some of your holiday shopping needs in September.

  • Goal: $5,500
  • Campaign Ends: September 24th
  • Best Reward: Choose the $35 Natural buffalo tooth earrings and you also get a Mix CD.

Treasure Bird in Dreamland

Did you know you can just make3 a video game? Local independent game designer, Ryan Hooley of PXLFLX, has done just that. I personally love retro platformers, and Treasure Bird in Dreamland is just that. Fund it so I can play it.

  • Goal: $3,000
  • Campaign Ends: October 8th
  • Best Reward: As this was written, there were still several “Early Bird” rewards that get you the game for $10.

  1. JOURNALISM.
  2. Kamala Khan, the most recent Ms. Marvel. Not Carol Danvers.
  3. And by “just make” I mean work hour after hour with skills I do not have, with little likelihood of commercial success, just for the love of it.
