  1. Okay well it wasn’t me because I was either a veterinarian or a rock star for my childhood Halloweens. (lame right?) However my older funnier brother was a flasher one year. He wore an overcoat (I assume he had clothes on underneath?) but then flashed everyone while saying “Trick or Treat”

I can’t really say that it was my favorite, but definitely my most memorable costume was when my parents dressed me as a chicken for Halloween. I was only in Kindergarten, but I remember being mortified. Our school did a costume parade and I had to walk through the whole school dressed as this ridiculous chicken. My older brother made the situation so much better by yelling out, “Look at that stupid chicken” as I walked by his classroom. I’m scarred for life.

One year I was the tin man and my two brothers were the cowardly lion and scarecrow. Skating at school skating party was difficult in all the bulky, silver spray-painted garb, but we did win a prize… tickets to come back skating again… joy.

Second, and this was not so much of a Halloween costume, but BEESUIT!!!

  4. Scott, that rocks.

Keep your tickets, I’d pay someone to NOT scare me! But looking back, a lot of my costumes were historical, like a mob-capped Colonial girl or one year as Abraham Lincoln with my hair pulled forward as a beard :)

I was 10 and my Dad made me a Jessica Rabbit costume from scratch. It was a ridiculously cool red dress with a nude fabric upper chest and sleeves to create the illusion of a strapless. Looking back it was absolutely inappropriate for the age (mostly because of the giant stuffed chest and the stares/comments that went along with that chest) but man I loved it.

  6. I was a mermaid one year when I was little since I was obsessed with the Little Mermaid and all. It was all fun and games until I literally had to wiggle down our neighborhood streets due to my fin.

  7. One year I went as “The Mouse King”, which was a character that I totally made up, but it was so well planned, and my costume was equally awesome. I had been watching The Rats of NIMH for years, and I was inspired by the Rat King from The Nutcracker I suppose. I made up a whole back story and had a large series of weird drawings of the Mouse King’s escapades and such, and I had a pretty awesome medallion that was based off of a medallion my brother wore with a Dracula costume, except it was a crescent moon. My Mom made the costume, and it was literally a full crushed velvet mouse costume with a blue cape and a gold crown. Also, for some reason I thought it was totally ridiculous that people didn’t recognize who I was, as if everyone had seen The Mouse King before.

When I was 11 years old The Adam’s Family (the movie) came out. I had always loved the TV show, and the movie was equally as quirky and fun. I dressed up as Cousin IT for Halloween that year, since that was my favorite character. My grandmother made the costume out of a light brown colored fur material, which went over my head and almost touched the ground. My face was entirely covered with the exception of two small eye holes. I wore a gold hat, just like Cousin IT had in the movie. I received a bunch of attention because of how original my costume was. It was a great Halloween :)

  9. Ok, my parents are not creative people so our Halloween costumes were always put together last minute or bought. Can’t tell you how many times I was a gypsy or a homeless person. There was this awesome witch (I know totally overdone) costume that the lady down the street sewed for me. It was freaking scary. I wore the costume to the Blissfiled annual bonfire. As I was circling the fire with the other kids (witchy yeah) a spark landed on my hat and caught afire. Good thing the fire department was there because my 5 year old body was tackled and put out.

My favorite costume was the year I dressed up as Pocahontas. I found a brown/suede-ish dress at a Goodwill and our friend’s mom took the sleeves apart, shortened it, and made fringe from the leftovers. It was fun being “recognized” as we were trick-or-treating…except it was super cold and I couldn’t bear to wear a jacket to cover up my costume!
