Goldman is out!

Paul Goldman is withdrawing from the Richmond mayoral race and supporting Dwight Jones. He will make a formal announcement at a joint press conference with Jones today at 11am. I must say, I will miss his politics of pwnage deeply. (From the RTD)

Yeah a shame that the guy who seemed to have it together the most has to drop out (I’m assuming) because of lack of support from the business community. That’s where most of the money comes from I would imagine. The only thing that turns me off about Jones is the endorsement of the Democratic Party. The politics that are destroying the Federal governement don’t have a place in City affairs IMHO.

  2. It’s strange to me that endorsements from parties matter. If you look on the VA State Board of Elections website, everyone is listed as Independent.

    http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/Cidate_Information/Cidate_Lists/CidatesList-Results.asp?ED=11/4/2008&ET=General&LOC=760&OFF=Mayor&PTY=

  3. Most folks in local elections eschew party labels either because they’re supposed to (by law or tradition most local elections are “independent”) or because they don’t want to be burdened by any baggage a party label may imply when local politics transcends political affiliation.

That said, many people are still looking for a D or R next to a name and lacking that will have no idea what to do with themselves.

  4. In my experience working the polls in low-income neighborhoods, loads of voters show up looking for instructions on “how to vote democrat.” Yes, for many, the act of voting is that simplistic. Agree with it or don’t, but being poor and/or black often equates to a political fight against the Republican party, trickle-down economics, and bigoted misinformation campaigns (I’m sure the reverse is true in other socio-economic groups).

For this reason, in Richmond, local candidates tend to allign themselves with the democratic party and bite and scratch for the party’s endorsement. Even in the 2nd district, Pantele had to associate his opponent (a Republican fundraiser) with Bush in 2004 in order to narrowly retain his seat on counsel. Maybe this is why the mayoral campaign has been so light on issues:riding the coattails of national campaigns is often enough, together with some GOTV through a few local churches.

Pauls a good guy and he had the guts to throw his hat in the ring and i respect him for that. I think Grey is best for Richmond. I like that one line he uses..”it dosent matter what boat you came here on, we’re all in the same boat now.” Rev. Jones and Pantelle seem they will bring back the old politics Pantelle and the IDA authority that gave away our tax dollars and not only did the money not get payed back but they lost alot of the paperwork, and I dont understand why Rev Jones invited Al Sharpton to come speak at his church, seems divisive. I think Grey has the experience to go beyond asking for more taxes or a donation.
