August sales tax holiday this weekend

Back to school shopping time! And thanks to the state of Virginia, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday you can buy (qualifying) school supplies, clothing, and footwear without having to worry about sales tax.

Back to school shopping time! And thanks to the state of Virginia, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday you can buy (qualifying) school supplies, clothing, and footwear without having to worry about sales tax.

A couple points to note:

  • School supplies must be valued at $20 or less per item
  • Clothing and footwear must be valued at $100 or less per item

Here’s a PDF of the items that qualify for exemption. It quite extensive and includes art supplies, music supplies, baby items, and even footlets. I don’t know what footlets are exactly, but the fact that they were given their own bullet point on the list makes them sound important.

And as anything involving taxes of any kind brings with it many questions, be sure to check out the Virgina Department of Taxation’s list of guidelines (again with the PDFs).
