1. I Ought To Be In Pictures at Hanover Tavern
In my not-all-professional opinion, it doesn’t get much better than Neil Simon when it comes to writing for the stage (and for the screen, really). Tonight marks the opening of Barksdale‘s production of I Ought to Be in Pictures. The show goes until June 21st, but it’s always fun to be part of opening night. Thursday, May 21st, 8pm, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, $38 ($35 with Ukrop’s card). Go here to buy tickets.
2. Butterflies LIVE! at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
It’s back! I know lots of little Richmonders are losing their minds over the return of this springtime favorite. That’s right, folks. Butterflies LIVE! is back in action starting THIS FRIDAY. This exhibit runs through mid-October and is serving as the centerpiece for the Garden’s 25th anniversary. Go here to check out how to make the most of your visit, including a Butterfly ID sheet to take along with you and tips for creating a good butterfly habitat. (My former 5th grade science teacher self might have just geeked out on that one). And here’s some extra good news: apparently the butterflies are most active on clear, sunny days. The forecast for Friday? CLEAR AND SUNNY. Jackpot! Friday, May 22nd, open from 9am to 5pm, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Adults $10, Children ages 3-12 $6, Children under 3 are free! 3. Liza Kate CD Release Party at Gallery 5
It’s no secret that we love us some Liza Kate over here. This fete marks the debut of her first full-length album, “Don’t Let the Dogs.” Special guests include Jonathan Vasser and the Speckled Bird and Mount Moriah. Friday, May 22nd, 8pm, 200 W. Marshall Street, $5.
4. Annie Hall at Movieland
I think I get more excited about the line-up they’ve got for Movies & Mimosas than their new releases. Anyway, Annie Hall. The mannish blazers! The ties! The neuroses! And also the fact that it won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. A nice way to spend your Sunday afternoon, me thinks. Sunday, May 24th, 11am, 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 for general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club Card. Booze is still extra.
5. Memorial Day Ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial
Let’s not forget *why* we have a three-day weekend. If you’re looking for a way to pay tribute on Monday, the 11th District American Legion is hosting this Memorial Day event, featuring Department Commander, Les Clevinger as the keynote speaker. Monday, May 25th, 10am, 621 S. Belvidere Street, free.

FYI – according to Barksdale’s Website, ‘I Ought To Be In Pictures’ opened last week, May 15. But that that doesn’t change how awesome the show is! You should still come out to see it!

Altar Boyz is still running at Swift Creek Mill (www.swiftcreekmill.com), and The Great American Trailer Park Musical at The Firehouse Theatre (www.firehousetheatre.org) has been extended through this weekend!

I got a sneak preview of the Ginter butterflies — pretty darn cool. A couple of them are as big as lamp shades, hippopotumus ears, bike tires — well, maybe not bike tires…but they’re impressive
