RVAJazz is 2 years old! For nostalgia’s sake, between now and the onset of 2010, we’ll be reviewing the year’s most exciting events as chronicled on RVAJazz. We did something similar for 2008, so if you’re feeling especially curious, check that one out too.

The year began strong! Vijay Iyer Trio visited the Modlin Center for a strong performance and spoke his mind to me beforehand. Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and his quartet performed at VCU’s Singleton Center. VCU adjunct and trumpeter Taylor Barnett gave a stunning faculty recital during a week filled with exciting events. The Oberlin Jazz Septet visited Richmond on a tour and unveiled Papa Ningo as a new performance venue. No BS! Brass put out their second album and packed The Camel, which, since then, has become commonplace for the band. We counted down the days to RVAjazzfest, which would take place in only a month.

  1. Wow! I was lucky enough to participate in or attend all but one of those events. What a great scene this is! Enjoying the trip down memory lane but trying not to trip over the fan bricks.

  2. Admittedly, I didn’t make it to the Oberlin Jazz Septet, either (that was the one you were referring to, right?). I couldn’t make it for some reason or another. But that gig opened people’s eyes to a new venue possibility, at least for a little while there.

  3. Yep. That’s the one.
