The long-awaited Black History Museum opens May 10th
It’s finally here! The BHM opens to the public on May 10th. And of course, we’ve been there already, no big deal.
“For 34 years, the Black History Museum has been the only museum in Richmond focused on telling and preserving African American history in Virginia. We are charged with telling that story as it was central in shaping America’s history,” said Tasha Chambers, museum director.

After years of watching and waiting, work is finally underway on the new Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward.
The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia planned to begin construction at their new 24,000-square-foot Leigh Street Armory home in October 2013. The museum recently announced that they will delay their renovation project until spring 2014.
