Woolridge Elementary Student Wins Essay Contest For Older American’s Month

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Walker James Scaglione, a fifth-grader at Woolridge Elementary School, is the grand-prize winner of the annual essay contest for Older American’s Month in April. The contest was open to all Chesterfield County Public Schools students in grades 4 and 5. It gave students the opportunity to acknowledge an older adult who has had a positive impact on their lives. Walker chose to write about his great-grandfather, James Hancock, who Walker says persevered through the Great Depression and is a role model for him. Walker was recognized for his winning essay during the April 29 Board of Supervisors meeting. The top essays from other participating schools were written by: Jack Eastman, Bettie Weaver Elementary School, Courtney Walker, Bon Air Elementary School, Cristian Ramos, Elizabeth Scott Elementary School, Rowan Connelley, Greenfield Elementary School, and Shelby Fink, Matoaca Elementary School. The contest is sponsored by the Chesterfield County Senior Advocate with support from the Chesterfield County Public Schools Community Relations office.
