The Friends of the James River Park and The Boathouse Richmond recently awarded their River Heroes, but the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Andy Thompson did a little more exploring with one of the recipients, a school that has worked closely with with the James River Park System’s Peter Bruce.

From Andy’s column:

For 10 years, a small private middle school has incorporated an unconventional element into its curriculum. One day a month, every month of the school year, students at the boys-only Seven Hills School make the James River and its environs their classroom.

Head of School David Dorseyhelped found Seven Hills a decade ago. From the beginning, he and fellow faculty saw the potential in Richmond’s riverine wilderness areas for a different kind of learning.

Dorsey and Seven Hills, along with river guide Mike Ostrander and Passages Adventure Camp, were honored recently as River Heroes, a new award jointly sponsored by The Boathouse restaurant and Friends of the James River Park.
