1

VCU

16-3, 4-0

VCU has won 13 games in a row, their third longest streak ever, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Aaron Williams

2

Virginia

Virginia-Logo
12-5, 2-2

That was a much-needed win for the Cavaliers last week as Virginia held Florida State to just 36 points. That is not a typo. Brian Leung

3

Richmond

12-7, 2-2

Darien Brothers shot lights out on Saturday, scoring a career-high 39 and tying a school-record eight threes against Charlotte. Deion Taylor got his first career start, and it proved to be the perfect formula…but is it potent enough to overcome VCU? Joshua Grice

4

Virginia Tech

VirginiaTech-Logo
11-6, 2-2

Senior Guard Erick Green, aka the Winchester Rifleman, led the Hokies to back-to-back ACC wins: an OT affair at Georgia Tech and a one-point win over Wake at home. The Hokies and Hoos hookup Thursday at Cassell Coliseum. Hoos will be heavy favorites. Gary Cope

5

George Mason

11-7, 4-2

Two straight wins for the Patriots and third place in the CAA standings. Good enough for numero cinco. Gary Cope

6

Norfolk State

NorfolkState-Logo
10-10, 5-0

At 5-0, Norfolk State is in position to be the #1 seed in the MEAC tournament en route to a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Watch out #1 Duke! Aaron Williams

7

JMU

JMU-Logo
9-10, 3-3

The Dukes lost two on the road last week, but have five of their next six at the Convocation Center, where they are 5-2 this season. Mark Selig

8

VMI

VMI-Logo
9-8, 4-1

The Keydets are in first place in the Big South and have an overall winning record. The rest of the teams in the CPR do not. Gary Cope

9

William & Mary

WilliamAndMary-Logo
7-10, 1-5

The Tribe’s terrible tumble makes Virginia Tech’s problems look like a stumble. After starting 7-3, W&M has now lost seven straight. Aaron Williams

10

Radford

Radford-Logo
9-10, 3-2

The 340th youngest team in Division 1, Mike Jones’s Havoc 2.0 is still a few seasons away from a Big South title. Aaron Williams

11

Hampton

Hampton-Logo
5-11, 2-1

Won a game and lost a game. Meh. Gary Cope

12

Liberty

Liberty-Logo
5-14, 1-4

Someone check the pilot light, I think the Flames are out. Gary Cope

13

Old Dominion

2-16, 0-6

The only thing keeping the Monarchs out of the basement is Longwood. If the Lancers win, ODU goes to #14. Aaron Williams

14

Longwood

3-16, 0-5

Longwood has two great opportunities to end their nine-game losing streak this week when they travel to Liberty and host Presbyterian. Aaron Williams

So George Mason beat BOTH Virginia and Richmond…. and is somehow ranked below them??? Not sure I follow that logic.

  3. Rick on said:

UVA is 0-3 vs the CAA, one of the WORST conferences in the nation. They lost to George Mason AND Old Dominion who is just HORRIBLE. What are you smoking? UVA is 5th on this list. (At best)

  4. UVA is very highly overrated! Having them #2 is a joke after losing to Mason and ODU.

  5. Peter on said:

In the Virginia Tech blurb, it says their game against UVA on Thursday is at JPJ, which is false; it’s at Cassell Coliseum.

@Peter, Oops! Good catch, I’ve updated the blurb.

This is a power ranking, so I try to view the teams more in the present tense. It’s very difficult to make the case for putting GMU above UVA. The Patriots beat the Cavs on November 9th, that’s ages ago. Remember how VCU lost to Seton Hall by 15 points on November 17th last year? By the end of the season, there were maybe 16 teams that were better than the Rams.

Remember, GMU lost to UNCW by 8 points 10 days ago. ODU is bad, but they have talent, a system, and they are capable of beating anyone in Virginia (look no further than the VCU-ODU game). UNCW is just bad. It’s also worth mentioning that 4 of the 6 CPR participants put UVA at #2 and only one (Ryan of GMUHoops.com) put GMU ahead of UVA.

  8. I think you meant to say, in VMI’s blurb, that the teams under them don’t have winning records but instead it sounds like they are the only team on the entire list above .500
