Folk Festival coverage

The Richmond Folk Festival is coming up in October, and RVANews has everything you need to know about it. For artist bios, event information, and more, check out the Folk Festival Guide.

I’m writing a little something on every performer that will play at the festival, and round 1 is already up. Expect two more to come. There is some excellent music coming our way…

Jazz tonight

This just in: The John Winn-tet is playing a free concert tonight at the Henrico Theatre from 7 to 9. The theatre requests you call in advance to reserve your seat. Check out some details below, courtesy Adam Larrabee:

We’ll be playing all kinds of jazz-oriented music, some singing, some swinging, some funk, some ballads, and maybe a surprise or two. Also a couple of funny, and poignant songs. The band will be:

John Winn: Sax & Vocals
Adam Larrabee: guitar
Randall Pharr: bass
Brian Caputo: drums.

There is a strong possibility that Daniel Clarke will drop in to play some piano as well (if his plane gets in from Minneapolis in time).

Moving on with Kessler

The Richmond Jazz Festival is over, and so is our coverage of it. Back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Like this. It’s pianist Steve Kessler’s birthday, and on Tuesday night he’ll be celebrating with a CD pre-release party and a performance by his trio. His eccentric style is one of a kind, and it seems that his methods of releasing an album are just as unique. While there won’t be CDs for sale, you’ll be able to listen to the band that made it as well as Brian Jones Percussion Ensemble. Pianist and experimental musician Marty McCavitt will perform during set break.

Gulf Give RVA this Thursday

Richmond’s first and only benefit for the oil spill disaster is Gulf Give RVA, and it’s happening Thursday. I don’t have to tell you why it’s a great cause and why you should go, but it just so happens that there’s added incentive: a night of great music including a set by No BS! Brass.

No BS! will headline the benefit concert, which will also feature performances by Jackass Flats, David Shultz and the Skyline, and more. Local businesses and individuals have donated items for raffle and for a silent auction. And it’s at Legend Brewing Company so (duh) good beer will be aplenty. A $10 suggested donation gets you in, and all proceeds benefit the Gulf Restoration Network.

VMFA’s Jazz Cafe continues

Jazz Cafe at the new Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’s Best Cafe continues in July, presented by the VMFA and Richmond Jazz Society. Every Thursday, a different band plays in the cafe, and there’s no cover charge. If you haven’t made it to the beautiful museum since its massive renovation, plan to go on a Thursday between 6-9pm for some free (of charge) jazz. Next up in July:

July 8 – Debo Dabney Trio
Richmond’s all-time favorite soulful Jazz pianist

July 15 – Gypsy Roots Trio
Keeping the tradition of Gypsy Jazz alive – Manouche!

July 22 – Jason Jenkins Trio
Bassist Jason Jenkins puts his spin on Mingus and Monk, Jazz straight ahead!

July 29 – Quatro Na Bossa
Jazz meets Samba and Bossa Nova

Bits and pieces

Heading into this weekend with an assortment of links and show picks.

Listen first on NPR

The new David Karsten Daniels & Fight the Big Bull album, I Mean to Live Here Still, is getting lots of deserved attention. It’s an album that marks a big step for Richmond’s own lovable beast, FTBB, and one that we’ll be discussing on this blog very soon. But now, with a week until the album’s release, NPR is giving you the chance for an exclusive first listen of the entire album.

It’s something they do all the time, and they’re even featuring other new albums this week by Jason Moran and the Bandwagon and Herbie Hancock.

A great way to spend a morning, as I’m figuring out once again…

Bob Blumenthal, you have defeated me again.

Regarding the Upper East Side Big Band Abbey Road Project and The Girtles concert tomorrow night at Dogwood Dell…

Sights and sounds (without the sounds)

When live music is involved, photos can’t make you feel like you were there. Not even a live recording can when the visual element is absent. It takes going out and seeing (and listening, and feeling) the show to get the full experience. We’re all about that around here. But because photos are really fun […]
