Virginia War Memorial collecting worn American flags for proper disposal
This is the 3rd year the Virginia War Memorial has offered this service.
According to the VFW website there is a very specific method for disposing of a worn American flag.
- The flag should be folded in its customary manner.
- It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.
- Place the flag on the fire.
- The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
- After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.
- Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.
If you don’t have the time take the proper steps the for the 3rd year the Virginia War Memorial is collecting flags and will be respectfully disposing of your stars and stripes.
From November 6th through the 15th individuals, businesses and organizations invited to drop off worn and used American flags at the Edward A McMurtrie Grand Lobby of the Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center at the Virginia War Memorial, 621 South Belvidere Street.
Flags will be properly retired and disposed of by American Legion Post 84 in Henrico County and this service is free of charge.
